How long will the process take?

Here's the typical timeline for Classification:

START

Collect SKUs

Collect SKUs to be reviewed and the supporting specifications and/or commercial literature.

2-4 Weeks

Analyze

  • Analyze the products by reviewing the HTSUS, chapter and explanatory notes and any existing rulings.
2-4 Weeks

Determination

  • Present findings to importer and determine any subsequent action.
2-4 Weeks

Protest

Begin submitting protests for any overpayments in duty.

  • Most import: brokers have knowledge of the HTSUS but not the product to be classified
  • No matter how basic your product may seem, the import tariff classification may be incorrect
  • An inaccurate classification could result in a significant overpayment of duty
  • An importer who underpays duty based on an imprecise classification could be subject to monetary penalties and an interruption in the receipt of merchandise
